Teaching Homes In Northern Kentucky

Welcome!!

Teaching Homes In Northern Kentucky is a consortium of families from the northern-most counties of Kentucky who base the education of our children in our homes. In THINK, we try to support one another as we attempt to raise our children in a manner that glorifies God.

From August through November and January through May we hold meetings for home schooling families usually on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the 7 Hills Church in Florence, Kentucky. (Check below for information and exact dates of upcoming meetings.)

We publish a member contact list and a monthly newsletter.

For those new to homeschooling or new to the area or state, we do conduct a 'New Home Schooler's Meeting' at 6:30pm before every THINK meeting. Someone will be there to discuss homeschooling in general, homeschooling in Kentucky, and how to get started. There is time to ask questions as well. We have packets of information available for those attending. Also, be sure to check-out our New Homeschoolers page for more helpful information.

2008 Annual THINK Spelling Bee

The November THINK meeting is the Annual Spelling Bee, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Grace of Fellowship Church, 9379 Gunpowder Road, Florence, KY 41042.  The bee is part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and is broken down into 4 graded categories:

1st-2nd grade
3rd-4th grade
5th-6th grade
7th-8th grade

Each of these groups will have 1st and 2nd place winners who will receive trophies and will also be eligible to participate in the final round. The top two spellers in the final round will receive additional trophies and the winner also earns a position in the regional bee in February 2009.

Although this is an opportunity for the winner to go to the National Spelling Bee, we do try to keep it on a level that is enjoyable for the participants. Most words start at or below grade level so that each child will have an opportunity to get one or more words correct and to become comfortable speaking into the microphone before the words become more challenging.

There is a cost of $1 per student participant. This helps cover the cost of the trophies and other materials.  You must be a member of THINK for your child(ren) to participate.  You can pre-register by emailing Jeff Foss at spellingbee03@thinkathome.com with the names and grade levels of your children participating.  You can pay the $1 on the night of the bee if you have not already done so.  A copy of last year’s word is available here.  This will give you an idea of level of difficulty.

If your students would like to study for the bee there is help on-line at www.spellingbee.com and www.myspellit.com.  For the upper grades, many of these words will be taken from these sources.

We hope that you will come out for this event. Participation in this has always been strong and most children find it fun because we keep the words reasonable.  If you have children that are unsure about participating, bring them out to watch and perhaps next year they will give it a try!

Directions to Grace Fellowship: Take I-71 / 75 to the Florence-Union Exit (#180), Rt. 42.  Go west off the exit (towards Union) and travel on Rt. 42 for 1.4 miles. Turn Left (South) on Gunpowder Road.  Travel .9 miles on Gunpowder Rd. and look for the church signs.  The church will be on your RIGHT - located at 9379 Gunpowder Rd.

No Meeting in December
