Kenton County Government Academy Beginning Soon
If you are interested in joining a board or committee in Kenton County, this is a great place to start. Learn about your community from the inside out. Applications are still being accepted for the 2012 Kenton County Government Academy. As an outgrowth of the Kenton County Attorney’s Local Legal Lecture series and an outreach service to the constituents of Kenton County, citizens are invited to take an inside look into the workings of their county and city government by participating in the Kenton County Government Academy.
Beginning February 6, this thirteen-week course will educate participants about all facets of local government. The class meets on Mondays for 3 hours with county and city leaders. With formal classroom discussions and through site visits and with hands-on opportunities, you can learn operations from behind the scenes. Some of the places you will visit this year include the Animal Shelter, Public Works, Kenton County Board of Education, Sanitation District, Fire Departments, and the Covington Police Department. “My goal is to continue a process where the average citizen will have a clear understanding of local government functions and why things work the way they do,” said Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmondson, who formed this program 8 years ago. This program helps the general public have a sound understanding of governmental processes. There are limited seats available so sign up today. Visit www.KentonCoAtty.com for an online application or call Susan Topmiller at (859) 815-1664 for details.

Winter Bird Feeding & Build~A~Feeder Workshop at KC Public Library in Independence
Brenda Clark, KCPL Adult Program Assistant and Steve Trauger, KCP&R Programs Coordinator will team up to present this educational and interactive program about birds, winter bird feeding, and bird feeders on Thursday, February 16 at the William E. Durr branch of the Kenton County Public Library in Independence. The fun begins at 7:00 pm and may last until 8:30 pm.
Sometimes people run out of bird food and even though winter is not over, that's the end of their feeding until next year. Find out why it's essential to continue feeding your neighborhood birds well into spring. Learn about different types of feeders for seed and suet, best seed recommendations, and what birds you can expect to attract to your backyard. You’ll even get to make a feeder to take home! ‘Parent Required’ to assist the very young if you want to build a feeder.
What type of feeder should I purchase? What type of seed should I buy? Bring your questions and personal observations to share. Join the fun! Bring a friend! You can register online at www.kentonlibrary.org/events/index.php?ptype=1&loc=3&kw=bird+feeder.
Directions: The William E. Durr library is easy to find! From I-275, take exit 79 (Covington/Taylor Mill) and go south on KY 17 for approximately 10 miles. Turn right on Walton-Nicholson Rd.
