What is Suzuki® Beginning Violin?

The Suzuki® Method teaches very young children to play a musical instrument the same way the child learned to talk. With the parent as home teacher, the child learns through daily listening and repetition of lesson material. Each skill is presented sequentially in the smallest possible task to ensure success and mastery of each step. Students in the Suzuki® Method start at a very young age (before age 5 is ideal) and their success is dependent on parental participation in every lesson and home practice . . . because of the level of commitment, Suzuki® lessons won’t work for every family.

How is it different from Traditional lessons?

Suzuki students can begin lessons as young as age 3 and learning to read music (theory) is postponed until the child starts reading in school. Suzuki students also use a standard repertoire and participate in monthly group lessons. The focus of each lesson is to prepare the parent/home teacher for practicing the material in the coming week. Traditional lessons offer a more flexible repertoire and curriculum that allow student and parent more input into the repertoire and, while reading is postponed until basic playing skills are mastered, theory and reading are introduced at a much earlier stage. In either case, the focus is mastery of each skill (i.e. the ability to repeat it consistently) rather than “learning songs”.

Who is teaching the class?

Laura Klein, a registered Suzuki® teacher for Pre-Twinkle and Violin/Viola Books 1-4, teaches all of the Suzuki® Method lessons and classes. Ms. Klein’s teacher training was completed with Ed Kreitman, Roger Steig, and Rebecca Sandrock, all internationally recognized teacher trainers who studied directly with Dr. Suzuki. Additionally, Miss Laura has participated in on-going teacher training with the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), including completion of the String Teachers Enrichment Program (STEP). In addition to her private studio, Miss Laura has taught strings and orchestra in Northern Kentucky schools and at NKU Prep, is an active member of both ASTA and the Suzuki® Association, and performs with the Cincinnati Metropolitan Orchestra and Seven Hills Sinfonietta as well as the Toubee Quartet. In 2010 Miss Laura performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and was a speaker at the ASTA National Conference in Santa Clara, CA.

Why a string instrument?

Learning to play a string instrument develops confidence, self-esteem, and discipline, while promoting music in the home. Unlike most instruments, string instruments are available in fractional sizes from 1/16 (and smaller!) to full size. Students learn technique on an instrument that is “right sized” for them from the beginning.

Will I need to buy an instrument?

No! In fact, it’s better if you don’t. Miss Laura can recommend several local music stores that specialize in string instruments and offer the opportunity to build equity in a quality instrument while providing the flexibility to move to a larger instrument as your child grows. These stores can assist you with all of your instrument needs from selecting a quality instrument and affordable rental plan to finding music and accessories for your lessons.

Please, don’t buy an instrument on the Internet . . . these are often badly set up and it will cost more than the instrument to bring it to a playable condition.
